At the frontier between microcosm and macrocosm

IFAE’s mission is to conduct experimental and theoretical research at the frontiers of fundamental physics, namely in Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology, at the highest international level. In addition at IFAE we develop the detector technologies necessary to excel in fundamental as well as applied research, particularly in medical physics.

Research at IFAE

IFAE’s fundamental research addresses the hottest questions in each of the above three broad fields, always in world-leading international collaborations: (a) in Particle Physics, the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, at the high-energy frontier, and the T2K experiment at JPARC in Japan; (b) in particle astrophysics, with state-of-the-art Cherenkov telescopes, currently running or being designed; (c) in Observational Cosmology, investigating the properties of the mysterious Dark Energy, with optical telescopes in the both Northern and Southern hemispheres.

In addition, IFAE conducts research on medical X-ray and PET imaging techniques, that produced several patents and a spinoff company.
