PhD Position in Cancer Biomechanics

14.07.2017

Project Description:

This PhD research project expands on growing evidence that the progression of cancer alters the mechanical properties of cells and tissues affected by the disease. However, it is not known whether these alterations feed back into the cancer progression and, for that reason, may represent potential means to hinder or arrest the disease at the physical level. Thus, the proposed PhD project will focus on understanding the interplay between mechanics and malignancy of tissues to help identify new biomechanical markers of cancer progression that are clinically targetable for the prevention and treatment of the disease at the biophysical level.

Tasks and responsibilities:

The PhD student undertaking this project will work under the supervision of Dr Vito Conte. During the PhD, the student will receive training in both experimental (in vitro) and computational (in silico) techniques, a multidisciplinary skill combination highly valued by the research community and industry employers alike. The candidate will especially focus on combining molecular-cell-biology techniques for conditional gene expression and biophysical techniques for the quantification of mechanical properties of cells and tissues.

Requirements for candidates:

The candidate will have a background in Biology, or Biotechnology, or Biophysics, or Bioengineering or equivalent. Candidate will also be proficient in English and have previous experience in cell culture, genetic manipulation and time-lapse microscopy. Candidate’s competencies in computer-based analysis and quantification will be considered as an added value.

We Offer:

– Full time employment contract for 4 years.

– Stimulating, interdisciplinary research and high quality international scientific environment
