Basic research serving clinical questions

The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) is a research centre dealing with cellular medicine, where high-quality basic research is at the service of clinical questions in the field and economic development.

IDIBELL is a foundation that was created in 2004 with the merger of different research organisations, with the involvement of Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge, the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Institute for Diagnostic Imaging (IDI). The institute is part of the L’Hospitalet health park, Biopol’H.

The foundation’s main scientific partners are the University of Barcelona (UB), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and the Catalan Health Institute (Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge).

Since March 2009, it is one of the five Spanish research centres accredited as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute.

A fundamental aspect of the research IDIBELL carries out is the close contact it has with patients. Due to their location and the daily healthcare activities that many of them carry out, IDIBELL researchers know which problems truly take priority and which solutions are the most effective in daily clinical practice.
