The new facility will bring together five CERCA centres and represents a €104 million contribution from the Government of Catalonia.

Catalonia is strengthening its commitment to biomedical research with the start of construction of the new building dedicated to precision medicine at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park–Ciutadella (PRBB–Ciutadella), located on the former Mercat del Peix site. This strategic project reinforces Barcelona’s and Catalonia’s position on the international map of scientific excellence.
During the institutional event, the President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, underlined the Government’s commitment to science as a driving force for economic and social progress—an approach reflected in sustained investment, institutional collaboration and a long-term vision.

A next-generation scientific hub

The PRBB–Ciutadella project foresees a total investment of €104 million for the period 2025–2029. Of this amount, €44 million corresponds to a grant from the Ministry of Research and Universities, while €60 million will be provided through government-backed loans. Barcelona City Council is contributing by granting surface rights for a period of 75 years, along with key initial investments to launch the project.

CERCA, talent and interdisciplinarity

The new facility will host approximately 950 researchers from five CERCA centres. The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) will relocate its entire activity to the site; IBEC will establish strategic research groups there; and teams from ICN2, the CRG and ICFO will also be integrated into the new building.
