A distinctive and recognised model of research centres in Catalonia
In accordance with Law 9/2022 of 21 December on science, CERCA centres constitute a distinctive and dedicated model within Catalonia’s research system. Their primary objective is to conduct scientific research of excellence and to generate a meaningful impact on society, in line with the standards of leading international research centres.
The same law establishes that CERCA centres must achieve levels of quality, visibility and impact comparable to those of the world’s top research institutions. Ensuring this objective is the very purpose of the CERCA Evaluation system.
The role of the CERCA Institution in evaluation
The assessment of CERCA centres is coordinated by the CERCA Institution, as set out in the current legal framework. This process enables a rigorous analysis of each centre’s scientific activity, governance, social and economic impact, and future strategy.
Assessments are based on clear and transparent criteria and involve committees of internationally recognised experts. Their high level of expertise and international perspective make a decisive contribution to the continuous improvement of the centres, their alignment with international best practices, and the recognition of the CERCA system both nationally and internationally.
A key tool for continuous improvement
The CERCA Evaluation system is not only an accountability mechanism, but also a strategic improvement tool that promotes scientific excellence, strengthens institutional quality and enhances the impact of publicly funded research.
