First of all, greetings to all Jordis and Jordines.
Sant Jordi (Saint George’s Day) 2020 will be remembered for decades to come. I am sure we all have lockdown stories to tell. It is also true that our current uncertainty about the coming months weighs heavily on all our own situations and perceptions. Cuts to public sector funding and restraint in the private sector are on the horizon. This could add to the funding difficulties for CERCA centres.
But perhaps this Sant Jordi will be a turning point that allows us to move towards loosening restrictions and normalising our activity. Sant Jordi has always been a day of joy… and also one of hope. Who has not made a wish on 23 April? Well, this year, more than ever, let us help Saint George kill the beast, be it a virus or fear, so we can rebuild from here. We need to be creative, lively and smart to keep taking the CERCA centres towards the Champions League of global research. If we do this successfully, no barriers can stop us. And do it we shall… We’ve done it before.
I simply wish you a great Sant Jordi (in lockdown). Let’s hope it is catalyst for the task of reconstruction that now lies ahead.
May you receive roses and books, even if they are digital!
