The Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (ISGlobal) is the result of an innovative alliance between the “la Caixa” Foundation and academic and government bodies that contributes to international efforts to tackle health challenges in a globalised world.
ISGlobal has consolidated a node of excellence based on research from hospitals (Hospital Clínic and MAR Health Park) and academia (University of Barcelona (UB) and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF)) and has over 30 years of experience in the field of global health. Its working model focuses on the transfer of knowledge generated by science via the fields of training and analysis and global development.
The goal of the projects in the ISGlobal agenda is to redress inequalities in the health of the world’s diverse populations.
In June 2016, the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL), an institution with 10 years of excellence in promoting and conducting advanced epidemiological research on environmental factors affecting human health, was integrated into ISGlobal. The merger of the two centres into the larger, higher-capacity ISGlobal is the culmination of a strategic alliance that began in 2013.
In doing so, ISGlobal has consolidated an innovative research-based knowledge cluster with the capacity to address health challenges, including infectious diseases and chronic non-communicable diseases, focussing closely on environmental factors.
